El Morgan, Helen Chambers, Some Sort of Threat, Olive Ann – Leeds

Frankly I’m getting tired of these ‘…this is the last gig I’m doing for ages’ bullshit but I genuinely intended not to put any gigs on for the rest of the year but for reasons that will become apparent soon I REALLY won’t be doing any gigs from Oct onwards for a good whilst so lap this shit up!

Another reason for this gig is because come on who could turn down this loveable gang of Southerners?!  All of the artists playing this gig are top people and incredible musicians so it’s a real joy to put them all on together and to be having Dock Street Market host the event really tops the cake.  If you don’t know the venue it’s central Leeds, has it’s own bakery, amazing meat, veggie, vegan food and a shit ton of amazing drinks.  To top it off, it’s the Dock Street Market social on this night so there will be loads of people just coming to hang out so come on down…

The New Wave of Cut & Paste Presents…
…a night of uplifting folk music! Tuesday 7th August 2012 at Dock Street Market (Dock Street, Leeds) …
EL MORGAN
http://elmorgan.bandcamp.com/ Straight out of Southsea! If you know her and her songs – you love her, if you are yet to meet her then be prepared for the sheer awesomeness.  Huge of voice and heart, El’s punk inspired folk represents the finest on offer.
HELEN CHAMBERS
http://helenchambers.bandcamp.com/ London’s loss was York’s gain when Helen moved North.  Uplifting thoughtful country/folk bangers.  Imagine if you will Hank Williams were he a Northern Lady.
SOME SORT OF THREAT
http://somesortofthreat.bandcamp.com/ A man so young should not be such an accomplished musician, so leave your resentment and jealousy at the door!  Channelling Crass and Billy Bragg via an acoustic guitar.
OLIVE ANNE
http://oliveanne.bandcamp.com/ The wandering musician from Cardiff via Southampton and one of the soon to be huge folk trio THREE PAIRS OF SHOES.  Olive shows she can belt it out solo on this rare Northern gig.
There will also be the amazing opportunity to get involved with the usual Dock Street Market Tuesday Social where you can try your hand at knitting, letter writing or board games before (or politely during!) acts. There are loads of awesome drinks offers, including discounted Tea Pot Cocktails and a chance to try the highly recommended Root Beer Floats as well as Dock Streets usual fantastic selection of craft beers and tasty veggie/vegan/meat food menu.
The gig is FREE ENTRY but a quid or two chucked in the donation glass would be much appreciated to cover the act’s petrol costs. Feel free to come down whenever you like and bands will be playing from around 7:30

SPINES & Helen Chambers – OOSXI

SPINES & Helen Chambers – OOSXI

I went to Out of Spite 11 this weekend just gone – it was my first experience of this legendary Leeds festival and it met all expectations; I got to see the Car Bar (and evern Car Pub!), met up with a load of friends I haven’t seen for ages, meet some great new folk and see some incredible bands.  There were some cracking bands that I hadn’t seen before (JR and Coal Train especially) but I can honestly say I didn’t see a shit band all weekend, it was great to see the new Southport line up and Bangers, The Arteries and Protectors all played the best and most appreciated sets I’ve seen of them yet.  Pylon blew me away beyond all expectation and I’m just gutted I wasn’t able to record more of the weekend (damn you Duracell!).

I did get a video of Spines, which is Lloyd (Blocko/Southport/Ruin You!), Lee (Dauntless Elite/Joe 90/Homebrew) and Rob (sWord/Joe 90)’s new band, so take a look and see what you think.  Then below that is Helen Chambers playing ‘Sofa’ on the acoustic stage, finally starting to get the recognition that she deserves.  Enjoy!

New Year New Start/New Year Pre Start

Bombed Out Records is a rather ace label from the Leeds area who’ve put out some of the best UK punk releases of my generation.  They often also put on some incredible gigs from time to time.  On Sat 15th Jan 2011 they put on the above splendid all dayer at The Well in Leeds which was a pretty good introduction to a lot of Leeds bands for me and a great way to catch up with a load of folk.  Me and Craig decided to bang on a gig the night before too (despite me saying I was done with putting on gigs after 12 years doing it!).  That went pretty bloody well too.  I’ll leave it to others better with words than me to sum up both events but over the next week or two I shall be uploading sets from both gigs so keep checking in!

Helen Chambers @ The Portland Arms Cambridge 04.07.09

Helen Chambers – Portland Arms Cambridge 4th July 2009

On the 4th July 2009, DS put on without a doubt the best two days of music I have ever played or attended.  Over the course of two days a whole range of awesome bands played at the Portland Arms in Cambridge; including Logic Problems, That Fucking Tank, The Shitty Limits, Skimmer, Southport and the rather fabulous  Helen Chambers.  Helen plays acoustic folk music but tends to show up at punk gigs rather than folk ones and as can be heard here is very welcome at them!  You can pick up a copy of Helen’s CD ‘An Afternoon in Eastbourne’ from her myspace so get in touch as they’re very cheap and rather good.
